Hey guys,

So I found the stinger I wanted in Auburn Alabama, I live in CA... seemed like many people found theirs out of state as well and seemed a pretty straightforward process. Hardest part was finding a truck to pick it up and bring it here.

Next step is getting it registered in California so I can legally drive it... I go to the DMV to start the process, find out you need power of attorney and the registration from alabama sent to that local DMV. DMV lady takes pity on me gives me a 2 week temporary pass (after paying all the registration fees). Ofcourse I get a ticket because this douchebag cop said the temp registration was and i sh*t you not, not visible ENOUGH on my windshield (taped on there I guess not high enough). Whatever, he has a quota, i don't argue politely go on my way.

Call up KIA to find out I need to fax the request, etc over to them. Do all that, and schedule next appointment 2 weeks later. I call before going in to find out if KIA mailed them everything so I don't go in wasting my time... they did not they need more time. Schedule again 2 weeks later (thank god I've got a beater car to drive around). I call KIA up this morning as my DMV appointment is Wednesday, i find out its been "rejected" because they don't handle lease title transfers until 90 days after the purchase is made...

What did you guys do to get around all this? I'm laughing especially because the ticket is just a fixit ticket, but I actually can't fix it in time because of this...

Why are you trying to transfer the lease? There may have been some confusion when you were talking to the person at KIA. You need power of attorney like you said but don’t need to transfer the lease.

I bought mine in AL too but in Mobile. The dealership handled all the paper work for me to get my plates in LA. Got my plates in less than 2 weeks.

I’d suggest reaching out to the dealer and talking to the person that handles titles for them.

Ok i'll reach out them. So if it isn't a transfer of the lease what is it?

You lease from Kia Finance don't you? Why do you need to "transfer the lease?" Just register it in CA at the DMV as a leased vehicle. Am I missing something? Never leased a car in my life but I don't understand why you "transfer" a lease from a corporation. Pardon if that's a stupid question.

To register it in california as a lease they want the title, the transfer is I guess the title or info was or is in Alabama. I didn't think it was this hard either as I know others have done it... just trying to register the car in California

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...

When you ask Kia to transfer the lease I think they are assuming your are transferring it to someone else or to a financing situation. That I have heard takes 90 days.

You just need the power of attorney to be allowed to move the title from AL to CA. The CA DMV may require additional forms to document where/how the car was bought.

I bought my Stinger in Arkansas and "financed" it through Kia Financing. They sent me the MSO (Manufacturer's Statement of Origin) which is essentially the title with a lien by Kia Financing. I took the MSO to Missouri Department of Motor Vehicles and registered the car, paid for the tags and the taxes and no hassle of any kind. Not sure why a lease is any different. Kia "owns" the car in either case until you un-lease it or pay for it. What am I missing?

So I called up Kia again, the dealer won't get back to me...

This time i got a more seasoned person it seems than I did this morning. I'm still a little upset by the process. Basically I needed to request a letter of permission when I faxed the title department with kia. Because I did not, I only requested the power of attorney and requested them to the send the title to the DMV; the title does not actually exist in any kind of physical form until I request that... yeah. So me asking to have it sent wasn't enough, unless they see letter of permission they all stand around in the cubicle figuring out how much less work they can try to do that day.

So I have to send out another fax this time adding a "letter of permission" all this by the way was never mentioned when I first reached out to them to confirm where to send the fax and how to request everything, etc.

i know this was a few years ago but just wondering if you remember the timeline once you made the request. I’m in a similar situation now in MD now but Kia says I can’t request power of attorney/letter of permission until I have an account number which could take up to 30 days alone :(.

I know this is 2 years post your issue, however, we moved from NV to CA and we are having the same exact problem. How did you finally receive the appropriate documents from Kia? Thanks so much!

Sorry, side tracking but can you give me details on the lease deal and how you ended up getting the car...i.e. total costs as I'm in the same shoes as you. Please either reply or message.

Good luck with the registration and congrats on the new car. Do share some pics when you do get it registered.

What manufacturer is listed on your MSO, Kia Motors or Hyundai?
