I reside in and leased a Stinger in PA
Dealer A = Dealership I leased from
Dealer B = Dealership closer to me

Leased my Stinger in January from Dealer A. PA is a dealer only lease buyout state. Dealer A told me to contact them once the state registration arrived in the mail.

Registration arrives so I contact Dealer A and tell them I'd prefer to do the in person stuff at Dealer B as they are much closer to my house. Dealer A sends me payoff quote along with a lease purchase option document sent to them by KMF HCA as well as an odometer disclosure statement. I can't get an appointment with Dealer B for like 10 days so I go through the process of obtaining financing through my credit union, and have my credit union send a check to KMF HCA as per the paperwork.

Show up to Dealer B and tell them I'm there to do the lease buyout and explain the check has already been mailed to KMF. They told me I should have never done that, as the payoff should go to the dealer and then the dealer pays KMF in PA. I show them the paperwork Dealer A gave me and they are beside themselves that Dealer A provided internal paperwork that I should have never been given. They tell me to contact my credit union and cancel the check immediately. They also give me a vehicle buyer's order that shows the actual buyout amount including title fees and what not.

This is mid February. KMF had already cashed the check, so I call KMF and ask them to issue a refund check back to my credit union, and then I will just start the process over again with Dealer B. They tell me it takes up to 15 business days to process the refund check, and then another 2-3 weeks to deliver via postal mail due to COVID. I call back in early March and am told the check was mailed to the credit union 2/27 and it will take 2-3 weeks to arrive. Starting mid March I start calling my credit union and they are doing their best to try to find the check and they have not come across yet nor processed. This goes on for several weeks so I call KMF back.

KMF states a check was never sent on 2/27, but a check was sent directly to me 3/3 with the wrong address which I never received. They can't confirm either were ever delivered. So either they sent 2 checks to 2 places, someone lied to me, or someone was completely wrong, and I've been sitting here for an entire month just waiting for this check to arrive at my credit union. They say they see notes about a check being sent Feb 27 but have no record of the check actually being sent. I ask them to process a request for a new check to be sent to my credit union immediately and overnight it. They tell me the best they can do is put me in the queue which could take 3 days to address, then 8 business days to process the refund check, then another 2-3 weeks for the check to arrive.

So now I've made 3 lease payments, 1 payment on a loan that isn't even against my car right now so I don't get a credit ding, and now have to wait another month and HOPEFULLY the check with no tracking or delivery confirmation will arrive. In hindsight, I should have recognized that I shouldn't have used that internal document to initiate a payoff with my credit union, but this was provided by the Finance Manager at Dealer A and I didn't really give it a second thought.

So yeah, this has been a freaking nightmare.

Is my understanding correct in that the early lease buyout amount is static and does not decrease as I continue to make lease payments, or is that not correct? I expected to make at most 2 lease payments and now I'll potentially be making 4-5 before this is all settled.

Yeah your situation sucked. 20/20 should have just waited for Dealer B to do everything for the buyout.
Didn’t even have to tell Dealer A at the time of lease, that you planned on buying out.
in Florida, same as PA. Need to visit a dealership to buyout.
In FL, I’ve contacted 8 dealerships to buyout. All with different final buyout amounts, as they add bs fees and/or dealer doc fees.
but one dealerships did not have any doc fees! Was the lowest by at least $1,500 if I remember correctly!!

good luck and hope everything gets corrected for you

Lol yeah I really wish I could go back in time and do things differently. Extremely frustrating process where I'm left essentially helpless. I didn't realize I was doing anything "wrong" until it was too late.

My credit union called today and said they called Kia HCA directly today and Kia confirmed the check was sent to them on Feb 27th LOL. So they can't get their stories straight and apparently have no clue to what is going on. Fingers crossed my request to have the refund check sent directly to the credit union actually gets processed and mailed this time.

Still fighting KMF on this. Still have yet to have the refund check delivered to my credit union lol. What a freaking joke.

Wondering if it's in my best interest to just ride out the 2 year lease and buy at the end at this point instead of doing the early lease buyout. I honestly don't understand the math too well.

Help me understand this: the "check" that your credit union sent to KMF HCA was for the total buyout amount? And you are still making monthly payments while all of this goes around nowhere?

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...
It was the incorrect buyout amount because the dealer I leased from gave me the wrong paperwork. Even if the buyout amount was correct, PA state law requires me to go through the dealer. I still have to make my lease payment monthly (as well as my monthly payment to my credit union as they've technically loaned me the money).

If I log into KMF I still have a monthly lease payment due, but under payment history it has the $47k check as part of my payment history and it shows up as credit balance.

You won't have to pay if you've already paid. If you have a "credit balance" you can just stop monthly payments altogether until the "credit" amount has been reached. Surely this fubar is in no way your fault or responsibility.

Yeah but then I run into the issue once the refund check is issued that I have a negative balance on my lease and have to true up. At this point they are so incompetent that I'm afraid to request anything else from them.

I just called again this morning and was told the check still hasn't been mailed out (17 business days since my last request to have the refund check issued). I was told this should be resolved within the next 3 days and they will call me back :|

I see. For some reason I was taking this as the cheque is a done deal; no refund, just live with it. Since that is not the case, then you just have to wait till they sort it out. Once burned twice shy. I would never try a second time to do the buyout if this had happened to me: just finish the lease.:sleep:

Well I fully intend to own the car long term so I may as well purchase now is how I look at it. The second time I will be going directly to my local dealer and making sure everything gets done correctly this time. Hopefully... hahaha.

I guess if you do the buyout early you'll still save some money (on lease rent); and having YOUR dealer do the whole thing will absolve you of any expectations; then the process just takes as long it takes. And you have the opportunity to refer to this fiasco as a "learning experience". :P

Finally have light at the end of the tunnel. Been working with my CU to chase down the most recent check that was "mailed". I logged into KMF today and that $47k and change credit balance that was there after they deposited the check is now $0 so I think my CU have begun processing depositing a check that actually arrived.

I will still likely do lease buyout via my local dealer ASAP, if for no other reason than to get my title away from KMF after this horrible customer service experience.

If keeping the car is your intention, then I see no reason to complete the lease if you can do the buyout now. Title in hand is a great feeling of freedom.

My lease ends soon. I am also in pa. Plan on talking to money guy at Kia dealer when I go in for the annual inspections. Want to buy out lease. I will let you know what happens. hopefully I willl not havethe problem you did

If you work with the finance guy at the dealership you want to buy out at you should be fine. My issue stemmed from working with 2 dealerships at the same time. Good luck!

The saga finally ended at the end of July. Apparently above the escalation team there is ANOTHER escalation team who was able to create a new check, ship it FedEx with tracking on their dollar, and have this completed in less than 3 days. Why it took over 6 freaking months to get to that point I have no idea, but this is finally over.

At this point I think I'm just going to ride out my 2 year lease and get an EV6 GT :)

Do you remember which dealer offered the lowest for the buy out?

Yep. Regal Kia in Lakeland, but when I informed another Stinger owner wanting to buyout, they charged him a doc fee
