This is my first post so bear with me.

I just left the dealership with some quotes since I need my brakes worked on. This is my 2nd time getting the brakes resurfaced and I just hit 35,000 miles. This is more of my commuter car than anything and I haven’t driven too crazy in it. I went in to the dealership asking for my brakes to get resurfaced and they came back with a quote for 105$ per axle. They called me an hour later and said my brake pads in the front need to be replaced asap because they are at 30%. He had a quote already for 1200$ for just the front pads. In return I asked how much rotors and pads all around would cost me instead and he came back with 2800$. After some research, I can’t find any aftermarket or oem parts that even come close to these prices. This is the same dealership I bought the car at. I was curious if you guys have run into similar stories or know if this is what everyone is paying for this. I’m still in shock at how much they are charging for these parts. Also what aftermarket brake pads/rotors are you guys going with. Thanks!

I bought StopTech front and rear pads gor $215 at K8STINGERSTORE. Installed them on the weekend. Didn’t resurface my rotors because I changed the pads at 100 miles on the odo.

I have a 2020 gt1 with brembos , I have 22 k miles on the car and just replaced all the rotors with R1 concepts drilled and slotted and went with power stop Z26 warrior pads all around . Rotors were 675.00 for all 4 and the pads were 180.00 for front and rear

I heard much the same thing when it was time to redo my brakes. The pads on this car are truly very easy, and all four wheels could be done in about an hour. Changing the rotors is a little harder, simply because of their tendency to stick to the hubs. I was able to source EBC pads and rotors for ~$1100, and the installation cost about $400 at a local shop, so right around ~$1500 for MUCH better brakes.

last fall, at the dealer, the service guy said that they had just replaced the brakes on a stinger for $2,800. this was provided information on the topic of how long brakes last. I have over 60,000 miles and 8mm of pad left. the replacement brakes on that other stinger were with less than 40,000 miles. I thought at the time that when the time comes to replace pads I won't be doing it at kia. rotors, same thing.

Only reason I had brakes done on my Optima at the dealer is because they matched the price of the independent shop I got a quote at, and my car was already in the dealer for maintenance.

If you don't do brakes yourself, take it to a well regarded local shop. No need to use a dealer for that. My opinion is dealer should only be used for warranty issues.

Same issue. Except the kia dealer said $1700 for brake pads because performance car and that is what the price is...also commuter car needing rotors resurfaced or replaced at 37,000. Going aftermarket also

The dealers are just padding their bottom line, they figure if it is a performance car, they can charge what they want.
Honestly, labor wise, the Brembo pads are easier to do than most conventional cars, you don't need to remove the calipers.

We have cheaper options available for you at our store that will be better than the OEM parts. For daily driving, I recommend going with the StopTech Rotors (CLICK HERE) and K8SS Elite Sport Ceramic Brake Pads (CLICK HERE).

I machined all 4 of my rotors today 115,000 KMs on the car, only 55k on these OEM Brembo rotors (all 4 were replaced under warranty at 60k)

Used these pads - Dynamic Friction DFC 5000 Advance

Rotors machined nicely, while on the car

Update: had Napa premium rotors and brake pads installed. 4000 miles later the problems are back. Going thru the warranty phase now. They have to replace rotors first to "make sure not a bad batch"

@D.J. apologies for reviving an old thread, but I haven't been able to find a shop to machine the rotors anywhere in GTA. Can you please tell where did you do yours?

OEM rotors are made by Brembo - pretty good stuff, and like $110-120 each at Tire Rack. Then add in Stoptech Z26 pads or something.. Maybe $300 for a full set of pads.

Yeah, those living in the USA have it easy for automotive parts...

Is there a way I can turn-off those messages at the bottom of the screen of your website that says:

"Bob from Chicago just bought a set of sparkplugs", etc., etc.

It is the only website that I visit that does this, and I don't care for it.

@SRV,

These notifications bring many sales by showing people products that they didn't know we carried. It's a fairly common technique and it works! But yes after you hit the (X) in the top right corner, it will give you a message asking if you would like to mute notifications.

I hope this helps!

I am curious as to where you had this done, I am also in Toronto

New vs Machined

NEW

New Rotors are cheap.

AC Delco the GM after market brand stocks product suitable for most manufacturers and is the Main Brand for GM cars.

Expect to find plenty of other brands.

Labor is shorter.

Removal Fitting Cost - Same

Product is new

Overall cost little difference.

Less Time.

MACHINED

Labor cost to machine rotors

Longer to do

Get back old rotors (that are narrower)

Possibly get someone else's end of life rotors that have been machined

Have to buy new rotors next time anyway

Do you need to machine rotors every time? NO.

If they aren't warped they do not need machining

Even grooves (which shouldn't be there anyway unless some dope has the run the pads down to metal)
is not a problem. Pads don't care.

I have always put on new rotors and frankly it is easy to do.

Even so, buy new rotors and pads, hand to installer. Save thousands.

The thickness machined was really inconsequential

Measured 29.85mm before
Measured 29.25mm after
Removed 0.6mm (0.0236" freedom units)

Spec is nominal = 30mm Discard = 28mm
