Dealer Markup Kia Downtown Los Angeles - Los Angeles, California

Ouch...

It's like they're reading from a script--they say "$10,000," I say "Whoa," they say, "All the dealers are charging it." I'm hoping when my trim level and color comes to their showrooms later this month and early January, they will realize they have lots of competition in the somewhat-nearby area (maybe a dozen dealerships) and start dealing. But right now, why negotiate, when they don't have a car to sell me? And since I haven't seen anyone on the Forum post a price they've paid in my area, I don't know if these dealers have actually been getting that markup.

Just send them all an email and politely tell them you realize they're marking up their vehicles and that you're very interested in a Stinger - AFTER they're finished with that. Something tells me they'll be finished with it that very day.

I hate to be a pessimist, but I'd be willing to bet that they WON'T "be finished with it that very day." I think it'll be a long time before dealers stop marking up Stingers, because they're sure SOMEONE will want one badly enough to pay the markup. I base this on dealers in my area marking up freakin' Kia Niros by $3,000!

Just my $0.02 worth...

^We've already had someone post a story about haggling down the markup.

I think it's a 50/50 chance - but certainly a chance worth taking. There's actually a few people here who've haggled-out those added fees. On one hand, they COULD have somebody come along and pay $10,000 extra for the Stinger. But they have somebody "right here and now" willing to pay MSRP. Maybe not an easy choice to make - but a choice will be made - and one of them lands a Stinger in your driveway...

TrueCar.com shows only a relatively slight price increase for that area, but I've admittedly never used their website before this, and I don't know how broad their data set is.

TrueCar Average of 0.79% above the MSRP

I'm wondering about the data set, too, since as of last Thursday only one, or maybe two, of the dealers I've been tracking (not just the 4 I've talked to) appears to have actually sold their GT2. The others either still have theirs in stock, or they aren't updating their websites or the Kia website to reflect sales. But that's moot for me any way, since they're all red cars, and while I love the red, I want to wait for the white. Which is another reason I'm not in a good bargaining position right now, right?

Yikes! Doesn't that make the 2.0 and the 3.3 almost the same price?!

It's all about time and inventory. Right now more people want them than there are cars on the lot, so the dealer's are in a better selling position. When the lots in local markets have Stingers sitting on them at the end of 2018Q1, the dealers will be more motivated to get their money back and they'll stop the insane markups and start dealing. It's supply and demand. For me, I can't wait for them to arrive so i can test drive them and then watch the market settle down. Plus I'm curious to see what issues the early adopters run into. And part of me hopes for those missing options to show back up.

Quite hilarious. A marked up 2.0t costs more than a msrp GT.
You know they always say "oh thats msrp no one sells msrp"
Yeah when you add dealercrap like paint protection and shitty tint also marked up it obviously goes up 4k.
Anyways ive been to ford and chevy and they all sell msrp. Usually they add tint but its not overpriced.

I've never paid MSRP or higher in my life. Do people really do that? Maybe I should have gone in to car sales.

ive never paid msrp either I usually scratch off a bit until the 16 sales managers finally blow up and take my offer lol
Yeah its pretty dumb paying msrp plus dealer crap plus mark up
They're sticking their fist far up you if you take that price.
Honestly they look at you like god dann you must be dumb as shit to take this overpriced offer.
I've seen chevy dealers even post under keep asking prices! Ford usually sticks to their msrp prices unless you know they have some left over clutches or fiestas lol

On my last two cars I went through the Auto Club referral service; one time I got the same exact Z28 I'd test driven and fallen in love with at another dealer traded to the referred dealer, and I saved about 10% on the price the other dealer insisted on, plus got some minor goodies thrown in and more than my trade in was worth. The second was a new generation of Grand Prix in short supply, and while I paid almost MSRP, they threw in all the mats and stuff and again, a little bit more than expected for my trade in. Not a lot, but it helped. So of course I'm ticked at this current situation, where even the Club-referred dealer is charging $5000 above MSRP for "fleet rate." But I'll hang in there.

I'm enjoying the irony of this: I just came upon an article titled "Some Dealerships Are Illegally Selling Cars Above MSRP," and the car advertised on the banner at the top of the page is--you guessed it, a Stinger GT.
