K&N air filter...yes or no? Any difference?

I added them to my car to go along with some 3D printed snorkels that I purchased from a forum member.

Honestly, I can’t tell a difference as I added a JB4 at that time also.
 
Are you asking about the drop in panel filters or CAI? I have the panel filters, no noticeable difference in performance or fuel economy. I got them for the convenience of them being reusable and not having to buy filters again.

I have the drop-in filter. No difference on the butt dyno. I bought it so I could reuse the filter. You need the cone for the sound and HP performance.
 
Same boat as Guzman and ChaneRZ... I bought them for convenience. Now I will say, when I first popped them in I thought I felt the car gain more "power"... but not really. Just the placebo and marketing affect. :thumbup:

I did back-to-back 0-60 and 1/8 mile runs, first with stock paper filters, then with the K&N drop in filters, and I measured my results with Dragy

TL/DR There was no performance difference.

The results were:
0-60 Stock = 4.96 seconds
0-60 K&N = 4.96 seconds
1/8 mile Stock = 8.35 seconds @ 140.05km/h
1/8 mile K&N = 8.34 seconds @ 139.97km/h
 
IMHO, I researchEd the drop in K&N’s & came to these conclusion:

My reasons against:

* 2 x Filters @ AUD$96.00 each.
* No performance gain.
* You have to also buy the cleaning kit & oil, another AUD$23.00.
* Potential for K&N filter oil misting to gum up the throttle body.
* I don’t believe the K&N have the same surface area (less than the OE paper filter) which will reduce filtering
efficiency.
* I take my car to the dealer for servicing & as we have capped price servicing here in OZ the OE filters are included
in the price so there is no real financial benefit.
* And again finally....NO PERFORMANCE GAIN, so there is no point to change.

My reasons for:

* Those that service their own cars.
* One off outlay for reusable K&N as opposed to ongoing cost of buying disposable OE paper filters.

Just my two cents worth.
 
I've used them on every vehicle I've owned for about 25 years.

On one (turbo) vehicle with what I considered a "restrictive" airbox position and design, it made a measurable difference on the dyno in back-to-back runs. That's the only one I ever had the opportunity to test - was working with a race team who happened to be my dealer mechanics (or vica verssa, I guess!)

There is plenty of data showing the improvement they make on tuned motorcycles. The first guy who developed an ECU tune for the Gen II FZ1 (he also helped develop the Yoshimuro exhaust) required it.

I have not put my tuned Stinger on the dyno, but the tuner recommended them, so I'm happy. I would have put them in even without getting a tune.
 
I have a drop in filter for mine (2.0) since I was unsure if I wanted all the sound from the CAI kits or not and the drop in was 5x cheaper. I dont really think I have noticed much on performance, the throttle response did seem much better like I dont have to put as much throttle into leaving from a stop. I have seen MPG improvements however, I consistently get about 23mpg and recently on a trip I got 36mpg.

My thing is even if you dont get much out of the drop in it's not hurting anything either, so for convenience and savings over time on filters it's worth it in my opinion.

I have had the K&N panels for about 4000 miles. Noticed slight improvement throttle response. Then bms pedal tuner, then JB4. Ok so last weekend removed the OE snorkel to airbox and a very noticeable difference in throttle response, so much that I may adjust down my pedal tuner. So did removal of the restrictive 90 degree snorkels do this or a combination of snorkel removal and K&N panels. Not sure but so far happy with K&N have had on several cars and never had a gummed up throttle body.
 
Dudes ... K&N "promises" what 10HP (that's less than 3%)? You're not going to get any real performance gain that you can feel. I think that buying fresh filters is easier than washing and re-oiling -- been there/done that, not doing it again. Put that money aside and continue to save for something that will matter more -- like taking your girlfriend out to dinner.
 
I got my K&N for just a little more than the factory filter or at least what places are charging for a not bottom of the barrel filter so the extra cash wasn't to harsh which is also why I did the drop in. I also already had the refresh kit from past cars I've had that came with K&N from the factory. As for the re oiling I like the hands on thing and working on my cars I know it's not the most convenient but I get some kicks out of it.

Mainly, do what you want it's your vehicle and just enjoy it.
 
Your butt dyno will want you to feel more power, and you may. But it will be very slight. A gentleman did a stock vs K&N drop ins on a G37 and averaged 7 hp across the rev range with peaks at 14 hp. You may feel it a bit at the top end but that's about it. Nothing too noticeable for you butt.

I get them for all of my cars. More air=more power. Simple. But don't expect to feel it.

Yes .. Air+Fuel in and the least restrictive way to exhaust it gets you the performance. Many people add a lot of stuff to the top of the engine to get 50hp or more ...but neglect the bottom-end of the engine that has to deal with all that added power. I've seen more blown engines because people add power but do nothing to address the guts of the motor.

How does that have anything to do with the topic. The Hyundai lambda II engine bottom end is quite strong and can easily handle 500+ whp. Adding 50 ~ 100 hp on top of the 370 is not a problem. Change your oil with the

Adding drop in sport filters like K&N might not so much, but it is one more thing that you have done to your car. Cleaning and oiling the filters might seem as tedious process to some, and those people should not get them.


P.S. AEM filters have better particle retention but similar airflow capacity. I found about that after I ordered K&N.

Particle retention for any aftermarket filters is not great, so if you are in a particularly dusty area (near a desert I guess) you should probably keep the OEM filters and change them frequently. :)
 
I have never had any issues with gauze/oil filters (K&N or otherwise) in the past, so I got them for my Stinger as well. Just...don't over-oil them. I put them in at the same time I did the VT Snorkels, so I think any butt-dyno will mostly be for the snorts, not the filter.

I also did the K&N cabin filter at the same time. Next summer I'll give my thoughts since I haven't had it on for long.
 

Skip to 6:07 for the K&N Filter. Went from 160.10 HP with stock filter to 164.42 HP with the K&N on a Subaru 4banger.
At 10:46 they test acceleration 20-60 from 9.01s stock to 8.81s K&N.
If you extrapolate that you'd get exactly +10 HP in a stock stinger, but I doubt you'd get even half that since the V6 intake is already less restrictive than a 4cyl.

I just ordered a set of the K&Ns so I'm looking forward to some placebo performance!
