Hi Guys,

I've been experiencing a vibration when driving my car pretty much since it was first purchased (only 4 months old and now sitting at 6000 km). The vibration comes and goes when driving around 80km/h and is most prominent on the freeway at approx 120km/h. I can feel it through the seat, pedal and steering wheel and occurs if I am either accelerating or coasting. The weirdest part about it is when I feel the vibration on a particular part of the freeway, the following day if I drive that same stretch it won't be there but then will occur again on a part that it was previously fine on.
I have had a Kia tech drive the car last time it was in for service and he said it is just the feel of the road. Prior to this I had a 2018 Stinger which was silky smooth on the freeway - this is far from it. Any ideas what this could be besides the usual wheel balance? I've balanced the wheels 3 times and also swapped to a different set of original wheels I have, but I still get this vibration.

I will obviously continue to take this up with the dealership, but as you know trying to explain something to them is like pushing shit uphill!

One thing I recently did notice was that If I have my foot slightly on the accelerator at low speeds and move the steering wheel from side to side I can hear a very faint mechanical/grinding type sound. The sound is not present if I am coasting nor is it there if I switch off stability control - Not sure if its related to the vibration, but then again anything is possible.

"Harmonics". That's what's going. Individual vehicle, individual harmonics. Most vehicles don't exhibit palpable harmonics to most drivers. Combine a hypersensitive driver, who is now looking for something that s/he has already noticed, with a vehicle that does manifest harmonics at a higher level, and you have the Perfect Storm conditions for mounting OCD.

I am sure that your car is fine (until it is not, as with all mechanical things), it's just different from all the others. No two are exactly alike. I hate comparing things to like-things and try not to do that. An obvious flaw, that is getting worse, that's a different story.

I assume they have checked the normal things? Like have you had the alignment checked? That can throw a whole bunch of stuff out of whack.

Could be some type of driveline vibration. Also, Have you tried turning lane keep assist totally off and seeing if that is the issue?

Merlin, I understand what you mean by individual harmonics + hypersensitivity but I believe this is more than that and exceeds the usual "tolerance". I can clearly see the steering wheel shake freeway speeds on a certain part of the motorway and then stop shaking on another part. It's like it has a mind of its own.

I've played around with it, although I never use LKA anyway but its still there.

I've had 2 shops check out the alignment + balance and all is within spec.

Have you tried having it road force balanced?
Not yet - I figured if the vibration is present on both sets of wheels/tyres after balancing both several times then I didn't think it would make much of a difference - then again it would be worth a shot I guess.

Is your car AWD? Possible that it's one of the diffs?

Sorry should have mentioned it is RWD :)
LSD going to crap? Others have had theirs replaced, and "vibration" was an understatement as they described it.

FYI - This has come up on the G70 forum as well...

UPDATE

I thought i'd update you guys and let you know the issue has been resolved. The problem was all 4 wheels and tyres (they are putting it down to a manufacturing defect) and after these were replaced under warranty - my stinger is now as smooth as silk on the motorway! Happy days!

But, what was the problem? I've never heard of anyone replacing all four wheels and tires under warranty for a vibration issue.

The problem was as mentioned in the first post - an intermittent vibration/shimmy of the steering wheel on the motorway (it would drive smooth for a couple of minutes and then start vibrating again) it was a different feel to unbalanced tyres. Dealership did all the alignment, balance and even changed the tyres but vibration was still there. They eventually got approval for new wheels and that eventually fixed it.
I'm just happy that i'm back to having a smooth ride again
