Do the Daylight Running Lights (DRL) remain on regardless of any headlamp setting or (low enough) world lights? (eg: dusk, night time)

Do the Daylight Running Lights (DRL) remain on regardless of any headlamp setting or (low enough) world lights (eg: dusk, night time)? They simply look cool, so I'm hoping they're on whenever the car is running (or at least when not in park and instead is in a D/N/R gear).

Please note this is an Australian MY20 Stinger GT (in case it varies from country/trim to country/trim).

The manual makes it sound like DRL turn off when in Auto mode (as opposed to 'low beam' setting) when the sensors determine it's low enough to trigger the low beam headlamps. Can't test this as the manual also states DRL turn off when parked, so it's clear I shouldn't leave it in a non-P gear to get outside and use my eyeballs to check! (Else I'd begin a comical running after my moving vehicle down the road)

An odd question I know, but I'm an odd person.

Not at 01:30 (AM)! ;)

Auto hold is your friend. Also, you could pull up in front of a plate glass window and look at yourself.

In "Auto" setting, the DRLs are ON when driving. Why would they go OFF when the light sensor turns the low beam headlights on? Every Stinger I've seen with headlights on also has the DRLs on.

Auto hold won't work like that, if you open the door it will put the car into park. They don't want people engaging it and then getting out of the car. A good thing IMO.

From my understanding the off setting actually says DRL OFF so it turns everything off. Any other mode the DRL's should be on, they're part of the headlight they won't turn off when the low beams come on.

I'm 99% sure that the DRL strips are on, but dim way down at night. If the stalk is in the "OFF" position, the DRLs do not come on in the US. In Canada and maybe some other countries I assume the DRLs cannot be disabled.

In the daytime, when the stalk is in "AUTO" mode, the DRLs come on whenever the parking brake is disengaged.

For what it's worth, in a GT2, opening the door puts the car into park. I have no idea what happens in a GT/GT1.

You sir, are a genius. Like on a Bond-villain level!

just as an aside, if you stop and apply the parking brake the DRLs will go out

Oh, yeah, I keep forgetting that the GT2 works differently than the other GT trims. Well, the plate glass window thing works with any car. :p:D

The DRL stay on in auto during day time (at least in my experience on a US Model). IIRC it changes for Canada and potentially other countries models. You can however disable them by turning the headlight stock to off

One thing I hate about the drls in the Stinger is that when in auto mode the headlights will turn on, dimming the drls even when it's bright as hell out. During the day, only the drls should be on unless it's dusk or really early morning or just plain dark out. It's like it's too sensitive.

For instance, we have a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The drls stay on all the time when in auto mode, headlights only come on when dark, as it should be.

our headlights on auto do not turn on unless we drive under a long bridge or shaded area and the drl's stay at full brightness. Even after a bridge/tunnel triggers the headlights, they turn back off once back in the sun. Possibly something is blocking the light sensor/ it is malfunctioning?

It's a brand new car, bought it with 12 miles, has about 500 now, done that since the beginning or at least since I noticed.

If the headlights are turning on in full daylight when in auto, i'd say for sure something is not working correctly.

Silly people just put your light stock on the first click (auto) for headlights and the beautiful 'eye lashes' come on in full force. I always use auto but also turn them off every time i kill the car.

When the car is put into gear they come on and stay on with headlights. If you use another setting on the light switch ie driving lights or strai headlights they are dimmer.

The lights are in auto mode. It'll be bright as hell out and the headlights will come on and take a while to go back to just the drls. As I said, they seem to be hyper sensitive on my car, no problems with this on our Jeep Grand Cherokee that has the same design.

Alright what is your climate like? If the sensor on the dash is detecting some bright overcast maybe it doesn't know what to do. . Just suggested because the jeep does the same thing

DRL's Stay on when in Auto, when its Dark the low beams come on, and the DRL's stay on, BUT if you Manually turn on your Headlights, DRL's turn off. I'm not sure why its set up that way, but that's how mine works.

Howdy and welcome, @PatrickG . This thread necromancy that you do, to introduce yourself, is disturbing. ;)

I realize that on my "back burner" is this question, still: after all this time, I still could not with confidence say that the DRLs are ON or OFF in a given situation. I do know that I put the Auto Hold ON when I took these pics years ago. But in "P" the DRLs supposedly go OFF, and above we are told that getting out when you have the trans in "D" and Auto Hold ON, and you get out, the trans engages "P", which turns the DRLs OFF, so, I don't know. And in all this time, I've never had this on my mind when in the car since, so, I cannot say, yay, or nay. :P

The Black is a GT2, at first with DRLs only, then later with headlights on and DRLs dimmed: I have no idea how @Gordo set his trans when he got out, or why his headlights came ON later when they were OFF at first (maybe he changed the lights setting and I didn't notice).
