GT2 RWD (19") rims, 2018.

I was going to a flea market today, and after looking for a parking spot for quite awhile, several blocks away I spotted a two-car gap in a neighborhood. Normally, I would have parallel parked into that gap, but I was so happy to find a spot, I went in nose first...and...you can guess.

I underestimated the snout of the car, and ended up gronking the front right rim a bit. Just on the outside.

I know this can be fixed...but I'm not sure of what the rim coating is...is it powder coat? Does it need a pro shop? It's about a 10" stripe on the outside of the rim bead. It shouldn't bother me THAT much, but it does.

Any tips? Anyone know of anyone in the CO Front Range area who could take care of this for me?

Totally my fault...and I'm still kicking myself...but I want to make it right and not go into that mode where "oh, it's just another ding" on this beautiful beast of a car.

Welcome to the Club (free membership for life!)!

Sorry man, it sucks. Mobile and brick and mortar pros should be able to fix, but make sure that it's going to match since the wheel is clear coated (polished underneath) and painted in different places. Some "after" results (non-Stinger) made me wonder if it's worth it.

My Camaro's front passenger side wheel was damaged at delivery and they had a mobile guy repair it. It looked good for the first year (pretty undetectable), but the finish degraded after that and it looked terrible.

I've chosen to ignore mine for now and save the cash. After a few weeks, it stopped bothering me...except when I wash it.

Curb rash sucks and is expensive to get fixed, depending on the amount of rash. As mentioned in some other threads, I'd skip the stick-on type 3M tape/protector and go with something that will actually protect your rims. I've seen a lot of cars in the Metro Vancouver area sporting the Alloy Gator product and it looks very sharp; lots of colours to choose from. I haven't yet purchased a set, but I'm considering it...before I curb my rims. AlloyGater.com

Did the same to mine a couple of weeks ago I know the feeling. Not sure how deep yours was but I just got some sand paper and sand down as much as I can. You can barely see it unless your staring right at it.

Lots of info out there, I like this guys videos and he has (at least) two dealing with damaged wheels:

You do realize the 360 camera mode has selectable 'close up' views, which let you see exactly where the wheel is in relation to the curb?

If you haven't used it, by all means check it out - it's kept my rims pristine!

Ya - I’m still trying to get used to using them. It’s not something I’m used to having, so I often forget I have the cameras.

As @MekstingerGT said, sand it down. You've already plowed through the clearcoat, so just sand down the damage using a three step process: I first apply 200 grit (because I have it); then I think the next available I have is 400 grit; and finish up with wet 2000 grit. Polishes up the now naked metal very nicely. It isn't as if it is going to corrode or turn some horrible color anytime soon. This was months ago and my rims still look really good from c. six feet away. You wouldn't even notice the rash if you didn't know it was there in the first place.

I am the "king" of curb rashing the front rims. Haven't yet touched the back ones. I will back into a parking spot if there is the slightest chance that nosing in will cause me trouble. And I don't care how long it takes either. Other drivers can just wait till I am done parking.

I leased my Stinger GT2 AWD. I bought a $500 warranty that covers paint chips, windshield, original tires and rims. I had a flat 2 weeks after picking it up. They replaced my tire and fixed my rim. I had a windshield chip fixed for free. I had curb rash on all 4 wheels. Took it to dealer yesterday and the wheel repair dude was able to restore all 4 to pristine condition. Not sure what it would have cost, but I have definitely gotten my money's worth.

The hell man.

You drive doing the bird box challenge?

Sounds like you need to have your stinger taken.

This is why you can’t have nice things Bobby.

I don't know why but this just made me laugh.

Were you in an accident?

I don't think I've ever curbed a wheel, and I drive blindfolded all the time.

Haha, @brancky3. You guys are just too good. @midlife crazy and I are mere mortals; and there are gradations in our brotherhood: all four rims being rashed is pretty sad, but hey, everybody learns. It's a good thing he bought that insurance! He was listening to the feeling in his cells. Good luck in the future!

When I was discussing with a buddy of mine potential new car purchases, I told him I was doing a '19 Stinger because it had all the missing features we didn't get in the '18 models (360 cam included). He was like, is it really worth it just for that considering the deals on '18s? This thread proves that I made the right decision lol. Especially coming from driving a GTI for the past 3 years, the cameras lend much more confidence when trying to park this noticeably larger vehicle. Hell, even in the GTI I curbed the back 2 wheels within my first month or so of ownership...

so I asked them if that warranty was just for original wheels and tires and they said no, it was for whichever ones are on the car. So if I got A/S tires they were covered too. But I have also gotten two windshield chips fixed for free.

You'll never fix a wheel for less than $125 so , getting 4 wheels fixed paid for itself

Like an idiot I nicked the left rear wheel on a little curb in my apartment's parking . Yeah I'm an idiot .

Us there anyway I can use sandpaper to rub it away to a more presentable look?
What grit sandpaper do I use?

Don’t feel bad. Powder coated my OEM rims. I literally took them off the truck and while bringing inside my garage, I was talking to the driver not paying attention, and somehow managed to bang the lip against the 1/4 inch edge from my garage/driveway. Like not even on the car yet. Not in my possession for like 30 seconds.

I’ve already touched it up. Likely need to re-powder coat this one wheel in a year if it starts bubbling.

I do more dumb shit in my 40’s than I’ve ever done to any car in my life. Like getting old sucks.
