3.3TT Broken tip on oil dipstick

Same thing happened to me, but the difference is that mine is stock dip stick.
It broke off at the exact location as the OP.

Dealer ordered a replacement dip stick and said they will have to remove the oil pan to retrieve the broken piece. It will be a 2 day job since they will have to use silicon to seal the drain pan and have to let it dry. In the meantime, they said it will not cause any harm since oil tube pump has a filter to stop anything big getting sucked into.

Apparently, over at Genesis forum, this is not all that uncommon.

I'm kind of worried that they might not do a good job on putting the drain pan together.
Hey so mine just broke off, stock dipstick, same type of spot, 53.3k miles. and the two local dealerships say it is not underwarranty. Was your dealership able to do this underwarranty? Cause id like to not have to pay for anything as this is kinda silly

I can see how they would claim that.

• 10-year/100,000 mile limited powertrain warranty
• 5-year/60,000 mile limited basic warranty
• 5-year/100,000 mile limited anti-perforation warranty
• 5-year/60,000 mile roadside assistance plan

I would expect that part to fall under the warranty in bold. Your post lacks details such as age of vehicle (from time in service), model year, or the like.

If the car is less than 5 years old from in service date, I'd push the dealer and/or contact kia consumer affairs for resolution.

Happened to me a few weeks ago. I pulled it out as the oil came up low when resting on speed hump. When checking the level and wiping the plastic is broke in my hand under reasonable pressure to clean it. I got a new one from Kia (Though I could have gone one under warranty, didnt want to drive till i had topped up oil) - IMO shoudlnt have broken like that so I will keep a check in future. This is on a 145K (90K Mile) 3.3 Stinger

Its really hard to say, but mine broke with only a little pressure. It may have been a bad batch (mine is 2019 Aust delivered Stinger).

The new one looks exactly the same but didn't break with the same pressure applied.

WOW same car same color same year same thing happened to me !!!
They should issue a recall on this. It's an easy and cheap fix for them.
My car is new, but I'm thinking in a few years I'll buy a new one just to be safe.

I think the consensus was to replace the dip stick at the 5 year mark or so. For preventative purposes...

Mine broke aswell back around 150,000km when I was checking the oil level because of the dreaded oil pressure sensor light.

Thanks for the heads up. Even though I loathe having to do do dealer servicing I will be leaving it to them and if I find that the dipstick is already broken on the off chance I do check the oil between services I will be taking it back and inserting it in said dealer.

I can understand something like the intake manifold, which used to be cast aluminum with lots of machining required. Fiber-reinforced plastic versions are much less expensive to manufacture and may even be made in more complex shapes not possible with metals. Not to mention being lighter in weight.

But a molded plastic tip on a metal dipstick?! How much cheaper is that to mfr instead of just the traditional stamping on the end of the steel dipstick? 3.5 cents?

I have to say I am surprised that no one has yet made an ALL metal dipstick.

Unless I'm mistaken and the billet ones have an aluminum, and not plastic, tip.

NGI Billet has plastic on the end.

I'm not really into mods any more these days, especially those that can't be seen, but would gladly purchase a "traditional" dipstick.

NGI Billet has plastic on the end.
In fact, I think some of the first reports of broken dipsticks were on the NGI Billet ones.

Exactly. I'm no machinist but How hard would it be to make an all metal one? Or at least one like ours but with a metal, and not plastic, tip.

I know this thread is aging but I want to post this here too for anyone it might help - I had this issue as well and I was too nervous to let it go, so I went hunting to remove it.

Here’s the thread of me doing that-
