So, after a gut-wrenching decision process that took us hours, we just walked away from a brand new 22 GT-Line, which we thought we were upgrading from our 2018 Premium. About to sign the papers when we were told they needed to re-print some docs. So we just checked out the car some more (first time we had seen it was today, had done everything online), thinking we already knew what to expect having researched and having owned a Stinger for years.

We found there to be no difference in the power, even though the 2.5 is now in the 22 GT-Line. Still, we liked the look of the car, new exhaust, black chrome, etc. So, still all good. But when we started really looking at the car we started to see all that we were losing, and I wanted to post on here so that others are aware as we were not. Our Premium may be different, because we had bought it with every package that they offered...tech, sun/sound, driver assistance.

So, this new car was gorgeous...red interior is REALLY nice (a deep, darker red, like a maroon or burgundy). Really nice. Now thinking it is the only way to go in the future, if they fix the issues about to list (and they keep the Stinger around). All of the below may seem like small things, but they add up and they are things you may be used to/use every day and not realize.

First...no sunglasses holder. Yes, small thing, but really? Really Kia? Find another place for the UVO wiring, or another dash spot for the sunglasses like on Nissans, Audi, Subaru, etc.
Second...no ambient lighting. Again, small thing but once you are used to it, it is a nice touch that you come to really enjoy/think adds to the car
Third...not really a loss, but a change...the DRLs changed from the unique double-L thing to just two straight parallel lines, a set on top and set on bottom. Obviously Kia sees value in them, as they kept that design for the GT1 and GT2.
Fourth...Memory seats. Now, some will say, hey I never move my seat...but my wife may drive the car, and again it is helpful, like setting one for driving, setting 2 for another driver OR for you, but while waiting for someone like the kids or spouse...set it to move back, lay back, while you waste time on your phone as you wait. Whatever the case, we always have had it and now was gone.
Fifth...most important, and really was the dealbreaker. Could deal with the other items, but as we said, they added up...but the GT-Lines do not have any front-end sensors. Yes, you can live without them, but in today's day and age, why would you? Why remove these simple sensors that are so helpful...help with parking, front cross-traffic alert, alerts for someone walking in front you (saved us once from pulling out with a dog in front of us that we could not see, right in front of the car), tells you how close you are to something like in a drive-thru, etc. Hugely helpful in cities with constant parallel parking.
Sixth...again, stupid, small thing that it is so odd to remove...audio controls. They removed the seek/track (channel up/down buttons) that were on the dash for the radio. We use those for SXM every day, as they also cut down the number of favorites...so you could jump to a section, say the 10s...then those two buttons were right in front of where you may have your hand, on the shifter. You can use the steering wheel to change, but it only does favorites, not just one channel up/down. You can use the touchscreen, but not if you have CarPlay or Android auto going. Leaves only the knob that is all the way to the right. For shorter people, a long stretch and unnecessary, and not as accurate, as you can easily go past the one channel you wanted to change.
There were some other safety things too, like driver lane assist and rain-sensing wipers that were lost.

There are some other small changes we noticed, like the headliner was now black, which we liked. But when buying this new car, we were really looking forward to a complete upgrade, but instead felt like we were taking a step back in many ways. Small things, but again, why lose them? We were told that other buyers ended up walking away as well over these types of issues, and feedback was being sent to Kia; the dealership was so understanding and now we understand why they kept asking us to be SURE that this was what we wanted. They said the same thing, that Kia should offer these things as options, or another package, not just lose them all completely. They hoped sun/sound might include them but they do not. The issue is that to get lots of these items, you now need to go to a GT1/2. But many people, especially now, do not want the bigger engine in the v6, with lesser mpg, especially when dealing the required AWD for the northeast. But they want the amenities that adds the value to the Stinger, which is what we got when we first bought this car.

Anyways, we did not see any of this in any of the reviews that we had read, watched on youtube, etc...for months! So was hoping this might help others as they do research, as I would have loved to have known these things...especially as so much of car buying moves online. We thought we were fine, as we never dreamed that Kia would remove things like the forward sensors. For people who have never had these different items, you may not care....but for those who have, or those just expecting them in today's cars, this info may help with a decision.

Hope someone finds this helpful,

Thanks!

Thanks. I read the whole thing and found your review very well put together (I like to know these things, even though personally it won't affect me).

Exactly...like, I see others posting decision threads between a 22 gt-line and a 2020 gt2, things like that...I think many are interested in the gt-line because of the 2022 addition of the bigger engine. We just did not see anything boasting the new power, but love the looks of the car, inside and out. Many people do not care about this stuff, but many Stinger drivers are enthusiasts, and these things may be important to them, or at least helpful to be aware of. Just want to help, as so many on these boards (like you, Merlin) have helped me.

All depends on where your priorities are. I do miss memory seats, but it's not a total deal breaker.

The 2L 255hp engine in the previous MY seems weak for a #3600-#3800 (rwd/awd respectively) car. The 2.5 300hp is a definite improvement and makes the car a consideration. Coming from a 330+hp car to the 2.5 was tolerable (for me).

The rest of the nitpicks don't rate highly on my scale. I'm more after the performance/mechanicals than creature comforts. Functioning bolsters would be nice.

Re front/rear sensors. In the old days, the only sensors available were built into the driver's head, two of them, facing forward :).

I have the 22 GT line love the car got the sun & sound package ,heated seats no heated steering wheel bummer on cold mornings, rear lift gate is manual not automatic, I'm a tall driver so I would prefer that setting on the front seat that extends out under your legs.
for a $41,000 base price sticker I feel like it should have come with those.
no regrets on my purchase really enjoying the car.
chromatic silver/wholf gray black and red interior.
I like the two line DRLs and notice people look at the car lot with those get a lot of attention.
biggest complaint is all the rattles in the headliner but I've had to workout one in the door two in the top shouldn't have those for 40K

See, that is weird because this one has the heated wheel. Makes me think there are other options to get.

IIrc, the heated steering wheel is included with awd models.

The specs say it's optional for all trims, but on p19 of the brochure pdf they should it as part of the awd package. Trying to build a non awd doesn't offer this.

It is indeed nice, but unless you've had it before, it's not something you'll miss (such can be said for many features). If I could get a rwd model in this area I'd take that over awd any day.

The change from "Premium" on the 2018/2019 models to "GT-Line" (2020/2021) was certainly an odd one. Kia saved money by making most (all?) of the exterior exactly the same as the GT except the wheels, which amusingly looked the same as the GT's except they were 1" smaller in diameter. But even with the only package added (Sun & Sound) drivers could no longer get the awesome LED headlights from the GT/GT1, electronic parking brake, or (as I just learned from your post!) memory seats. Since 2020 models, I believe memory seats are/were only available on the GT2.

The 2022 GT-Line remedied some of these omissions in reintroducing the LED headlights (although not as cool as the 2018+ LEDs), parking brake, and added safety features. There aren't front sensors, but the 2022's added "Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist", Lane Keep Assist, and Smart Cruise control.

All of the 2022 models now have no sunglasses storage, which is crazy. Kia's own website still lists a sunglasses holder on the specifications page.

The Premium model was definitely the most value-packed and it's a shame the GT-Line is limited in its options. But I have to admit, the GT-Line with S&S is still a competitive package, especially now that everything is selling for MSRP or higher. The V6TT aside, the jump to GT2 (don't get me started on how you can get the HK stereo on GT-Line but not on GT1) is pretty huge at $13-$15K. For that much more, there had better be quite a few unique features -- and there are.

Thanks, nice post. I am really torn over this decision. I love the new body accents, and the red interior. The deal I have is a good one but I plan on keeping this next car (usually lease) and I want it to be something I am crazy about, you know? Thinking I will buy this car out and hope that if they do another Stinger, maybe they add some stuff back in to the GT line. Ever since those sensors saved us from running over a dog (could not see it at all once in the car) , we don't want to be without them! Or the other items, lol. Willing to compromise, but this is a lot to lose for not that much in return. Again, really torn, worked out this deal over a few months, car finally arrived and....ugh. Lots of equity in this car that I will lose by keeping it, but I was not expecting to have any in the first place.

I'm guessing the 2022 GT-Line's "Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist - Ped/Cyclist/JT" (copied from the Monroney sticker) would have automatically stopped your car if it detected the dog, rather than make an audible alert. But I understand - it would be nice to have the standard sensors available.

This whole thing has me twisted up! What would you guys do? I could buy out the current Stinger and hope that the 2023s have some things added back in...but have to worry about maintenance issues creeping in. Anyone know if you can buy the front sensors separately?

Since 2020 models, I believe memory seats are/were only available on the GT2.
My 21 GT1 has memory seats (heated and vented)
Cant remember now if the GT2 had any difference in seats

Since my wife drives my Stinger from time to time and we are about 8" different in height ... memory seats are a must.

It sounds like the front parking sensors became redundant once the forward collision avoidance was added? Would you have "seen" the dog with forward collision avoidance?

^^^Oh, that probably answers my question above. You'd push the "GO" pedal and nothing would happen until the dog got out of the way?

Isn't it the responsibility of someone walking their dog to ensure it doesn't walk in front of a running car occupied by a driver looking to proceed forward?

Rhetorical comment.... I suppose not, given the dog walker is too busy reading their instagram or facebook with eyes buried deep into the phone.

So my Premium had all those things...Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist", Lane Keep Assist, and Smart Cruise control. It has everything except the adaptive headlights, HUD, ventilated seats...and now, the engine upgrade, new headlamps. Seems like Kia took some stuff away to help push trim levels, and have slowly added some stuff back.

About the dog, it was a little dog (like, a Frenchie) that we later learned had escaped a doggy day care via signs for a lost dog. Bad situation all around. Shocked us, that is for sure! For me, the sensors or a front camera are more important. If you have used them for a while and you live in a city, you know how important they are in negotiating tight spaces or parallel parking. Have had to squeeze into spots that I know I could not have done without those items. For some reason, I have a tough time gauging the front end of this car. Have not in the past, but this one...I dunno.

I am worried about losing the equity in the car that we currently have because of the crazy used car situation, but also wonder if I keep it with a lower payment, maybe 2023s will add something else back in at this level engine? No idea.

I sit pretty high in the seat. Maybe 1-2" clearance between the headliner and my head (6' tall). Not sure why I adjust this way other than that's how it's always been with past cars. Perhaps sitting higher up will help you get a better feel for the front end?

When I first leased the MY18 GT1, I was prepared to pay cash and roll away 100% owning the car. I leased because in three years I might want the new stuff of the current model year. Then I decided that I liked what I have and don't care about later innovations. I am completely happy with what I have now: and that won't change the car three or more years down the road: new stuff is always coming along, and that isn't a good reason to ditch what you've loved for the latest new thing. So, I bought out the lease three months in. Still completely satisfied with what I have.
