I don’t have the specs or info to back it up, but I’m almost thinking the “subs” are more like bass shakers and not actual subwoofers. They move air and cause vibration but don’t put out any discernible tone

I wouldn't know about that. But if the bass I hear are the notes that are supposed to be there, and the level of base is what it should be, I don't care by what method HK arrived at that desirable and necessary achievement.
