10,000 km in and a $255 maintenance bill?

Which dealership quoted you on those rates? Since I'm local to the Metro Vancouver area, I'd be interested if you did look for a third-party, and what they charge. I'm coming up to my first service in another month or so with approximately ~5000 km under the belt so far.
Kia Richmond quoted me those rates. I haven't yet looked for a third party to do the work. I'm just now at 6000km and will need that 1st service soon. Kia Richmond service advisor was adamant that their oil change prices were in-line with what other places were charging, especially when getting into the synthetic oil.

The one thing that makes me hesitate about taking my Stinger to a third party oil change place, is the competency of the employees. Those place can be revolving doors with employees coming and going. At least with the dealership, I have a certain level of certainty that the employees know what they are doing. Plus, Kia Richmond said they have only serviced 1 Stinger so far, so I doubt that a third-party oil change place has even looked under the hood of the Stinger. I think I'll leave the servicing to the dealership for now.

If you find a place that works for you and is reasonable priced, drop me a line and let me know who you are using. I'll do likewise.

Ha! We go to the same dealership then. I also have a Ghost Grey GT Limited.

I guess we'll see if we can catch each other around town then.

I'll let you know if I find other places for servicing in the future.

  • spark plugs @ 70,000 km (seems so soon, no?)

Not really.. reason I say that is that I had a 2013 Dodge Dart, 1.4L Turbo. I was on a Dart forum and was reading about how a number of people reported that you should change plugs around 35,000 miles (56K km or so) in spite of them supposedly being 100,000 mile plugs. 100K Miles seemed silly to me, with it being a turbo - since the hotter turbo engines can wear plugs faster, so I've heard.

So I changed the plugs out at 35K and the performance gain was noticeable immediately. I will probably change these around then as well. They are cheap enough to warrant replacement to just ensure the best performance and efficiency possible. Especially if you consider the price of fuel vs. the price of spark plugs. I do think I had to get irdium plugs that were about $45 US for four of them, but still..

I don't think that oil filter oem stuff will/would stick....oem is crap and any judge should see that.
You really want it to have to get to the point of needing a judge? I would just use the oem.

OEM oil filters are quite often the best filters available - they are made to the precise flow and filtration specifications of the engine manufacturers, who have a vested interest in them operating to very high tolerances during the warranty period. I have no problem with using OEM at all.

Thus just what the Kia service guy said to me; must use OEM filter o_O

My only point is there are better quality filters on the market, I used oem filters with the hemi I owned, I have no problem using them, however, If I can get better filtration and a better output I'll use it.....and yes I'd let a judge decide if need be. If you are a car maker and everything you put in to a car is the same as an inferior model....(like the oil filter) and yes it is! Do you really think it's the best you can use? Trust me , it isn;t and the dealers know this, which means they throw in the warranty card and voila!! more money for the dealer and the car maker. jmho.

I'm usually a pretty trusting soul, but in this instance I'd need to see a credible source supporting your claim that performance is better with a third party filter than the OEM product for these engines.

I completely understand.

My 15k check up was around that, they did oil, air filters, fuel injection cleaning, and just rotated tires I think.
Fuel injection cleaning ?

The question is not whether third party oil filters are better, the question is, is the Kia branded stinger filter any good? Here’s the thing, I have a 10 year, 200000km bumper to bumper warranty and with every oil change, the dealership is putting in the OEM filtered, not a third party filter. If the filter wasn’t any good, Kia wouldn’t be using them and they sure wouldn’t be offering a bumper to bumper warranty like that!

Yes, and as @rocket23 pointed out with the article he linked, a Toyota commissioned independent study of 12 manufacturers showed their OEM filter was the best of the bunch.

A different company, but one Kia has matched or outperformed in quality and reliability surveys as well.

Manufacturers are serious about providing top tier filtration on their expensive, warranty covered engines.

They (kia) also had a recall on their engines, not oil related, engine failure.....I'm just happy they got too it before production of the stinger hit the market....or did they?

Pick your poison. Some is much more expensive. I haven't heard of Stinger "engine failures" as a common occurrence, much less "catastrophic engine failures". This forum has a handful of incidents involving total failure; all in the rear end, LSD mostly. I can't think of a single "blown engine" or similar fubar. Some of these rear end failures are on tracked cars, so there is that "cause and effect" element involved.

without a doubt....we had members on a ram forum with the same problem.....they called it ''hemi foot''

Dam I tried looking for extended warranty, Kia doesn't have it listed on Kia.ca by anychance do you mind me asking how much you paid for the 10 year 200k?

Thanks

There are 3 different plans: 3 Star, 4 Star and 5 Star plans. I went for the 5 Star plan which looks to be the full meal deal. It cost me $2900. Not sure if that is a good deal or not, but at least I have piece of mind until 2028. I Plan on keeping the car, so the extended warranty just made sense. Plus if I go claim free from 2023 to 2028, I get $2000 back. I’ll dig out the schedule of coverage and post it so you can see how the plans compare.

It’s called Kia Protect

I’m up for my second oil change and the dealership indicated it’s time for the “#2 service.” According to the manual, there’s a bunch of checks they do every 10,000 km but it’s really about inspecting a bunch of things that have no business breaking down this early in the game.

So it looks like every first oil change will be just the oil change ($75) while every second oil change will be a special $255 service.

Doesn’t this seem kind of money-grabby? Are you all paying these service items? If I choose to simply do oil changes could they decline warranty work if something breaks down?

My dad is a retired mechanic and he suggested that most of these things will have warning signs. Eg if air hoses are loose you’ll start hearing whistling etc.

To make matters worse the service dept indicates they don’t do ala cart so even if I take care of some of the stuff myself (eg tire rotation) it won’t reduce the bill any.
You do NOT, REPEAT, DO NOT HAVE TO DO OIL CHANGE WITH DEALER, do it yourself, or someplace, just keep receipts, etc mileage when changed.
