Whats going on everyone. I just bought a Kicker 51ptrtp10 powered subwoofer and an LCi2 Line Out Converter. Im trying to figure out what other little stuff i need. Ive already got a wiring kit for the powered sub in the cart, ive got the basic electrical tools like crimps, cutters, and strippers. What else am i going too need?

you don't need a line out converter ... that sub accepts high or low level inputs.

a "pop-it" tool would be helpful for the plastic fasteners ...

screw-on type wire taps work great for tapping the wires at the amp (easier than the crimp-on type)

also, these wire connectors make the job very easy ... they have the solder and heatshrink built-in. just put the wires in and heat them up with a heat gun or hairdryer

Reviving this thread-from-the-dead...

I'm looking to add this to my HK GT1 (2018). Do I need to disable (I don't want too, I'll have a bass knob and it would be easy to remove the box and retain the sound) any of the factory subwoofers? Does anyone have any idea what the factory HK systems plays down to Hz-wise? My thought was to crossover the Kicker around there and I don't really want the subs fighting each other.

The system just needs more low-end bass. Thanks in advance,

From all of my reading, the Hz crossover to the subs is 40, which is too low - that only engages super low bass floor, not real notes. I like it when the OE subs kick in, but that only happens on tracks that contain that kind of bass. If you are adding a sub, you need to first find out how to raise the crossover, to something like 80 Hz. If anyone can swing that, I think an additional sub is redundant. And if you add a sub and don't have a crossover significantly higher than 40 Hz, you are wasting your money, time and space.

The sub has a built-in crossover 50-120hz. Could I use them all at the same time? Factory subs and additional. What would you set the crossover to? I appreciate your response. This is a Kicker 51PTRTP12, it won't let me link from Amazon or Stillwater.

That's great. I have no idea if the OE subs are sidelined or included when you do the aftermarket sub install. But just guessing, I'd say that everything in the HK will work as intended, which would mean that the under-seat subs won't kick on unless you have 40 Hz playing. But with the box in the hatch, you'll likely never be able to tell, since you will be enjoying a LOT of bass at a real level way above 40 Hz.

Thank you! What would you set the Kicker crossover to? 80? 100? 120?

My Pioneer sub in our livingroom has a range of 40 to 150, and I have it set at "twelve o'clock". What is that, 110? I guess. You'll be playing with it. Ha hah.

Agreed, thanks again. I appreciate your time..

How do you like it? Would you go 12'' next time? What did you set your crossover to? Also, did you disable/unplug any of the factory speakers? Do you have the Harmon Kardon system?

i added a powered sub and left the factory subs in place (HK system). no issues or weirdness.

you set the crossover to what you like ... everyone has different tastes. some like deep bass robot music, some like tight thrash metal.

you typically want the sub to blend seamlessly with the speakers, filling in the low bass where they drop off, but some people like more, or less bass.

Thanks for your response. That is my question. Where does the HK system fall off? Any idea? I wonder how I could find out?

don't know the lower end of the door woofers, but the factory subs are crossed over at a very low 43-ish Hz ... meaning anything above 43-ish Hz is attenuated ... they will only play very low bass frequencies.

you'll probably want the crossover in your aftermarket sub set to above 50Hz to pick up the bass where the factory sub falls off. typical adjustments go up to 120Hz ... again, you'll have to use your own ears to adjust how much bass the aftermarket sub gets before it starts intruding on the factory woofers ... set the LPF crossover depending on your music style, your taste, etc.

check out some Youtube vids for more in-depth info. i usually keep it simple and just adjust things according to how i like it ... i listen to mainly thrash/metal, and have been playing guitar for years, so i'm used to fine tuning audio to my tastes. my preference for tight, accurate bass would probably make my settings a lot different compared to someone who listens mainly to rap or electronic music.
