Does this curb rash tire damage to the sidewall warrant replacement?

Recently noticed that an area of the tire (curb rash ) had split open and can open it up like a flap (pics attached)
When i pull back the flap I still only see rubber - no belts or shape of belts which I am reading is when it definitely needs to be replaced

2nd summer on these pilot 4s and I have AWD. Which I'm also reading it's advised to replace all 4 tires rather than in pairs as differences in tread depth can strain the fulltime awd system.. even if you replace both front tires

what do you guys think..?
Is this a definite must replace? and if so replace all 4?

take it to a tire shop I would say no BUT they would likely say yes

If it were mine I'd replace it. But a good chunk of my commute is 100km/h+.

I would replace (especially if it is a front tire) ... and check the tread depth on the others do see if they need to be replaced - (I'm guessing the info is in the OM)

Definitely. Any sidewall damage requires replacement in my opinion.
I am not an expert. I would not be driving around on that tire unless its directly to a tire shop.
I would be interested to hear what the shops say.
How much further did you have in mind on using this tire?

I don’t always trust the internet, but when I do, it’s random opinions about the potential for catastrophic tire failure on a $50k car.

no one here can give you a hard yes or no answer that will hold up in court. If you don’t and it fails, you gonna blame people who said don’t replace it? What if it results in injury? Could survive without issue.

bottom line, is the risk worth a few hundred bucks?

just looking for advice - and no i have not sued anyone nor will i try to if it fails and people say its ok to drive lol

i'll go to the tire shop this weekend (working from home for now no commute). Its the front passenger wheel staggered 19" set

my concern is mainly that i'm reading for full time AWD systems all 4 should be replaced at the same time
articles saying if you replace the front pair only, new front tires vs worn tires in the back can cause strain on the awd drivetrain since the circumference is different which can cause premature wear to the drivetrain

so replacing 4 tires pilot 4s would be looking at $1100 for replacement tires + install
or i need to find a place that shaves tire treads down to match the existing - didn't even know there was a thing like tire shaving until i did some research today..

my dealer thrashed my wheel and tire with 8000km on them , they replaced both with new components , I certainly don't notice any difference

Sidewall damage that extensive is not something to toss off. But in my opinion the tire is okay as long as you treat this tire as having lost all high speed performance capability. It you treat it like a family sedan tire (i.e. an "S" or "T" rating) it should be fine for ordinary driving. I wouldn't want to push above 100 MPH with a tire that looks like that. And of course, replace it as soon as you can: don't try to get the last of the tread life out of it. But you can drive, just don't put replacement off.

If the front tires being replaced with worn rears is the issue for AWD drivetrain stress, I don't think that Stingers have much to worry about.:D The rears always wear out thousands of miles sooner than the fronts. Last summer I replaced my worn rears and went on a c. 4K miles road trip. Then replaced the fronts soon after that. I had over 18K miles on my worn rears when I replaced them, and of course another 4K miles on the fronts. You don't need to replace all four at once. Nor do you have to worry about replacing one damaged tire if your tread is still good on the other three.

do you also have awd?

will go to the tire shop this weekend
hopefully can get 1 tire and shave it down if they do tire shaving
if not maybe just replace front 2
tires do have some wear on them would assume ~13k miles on them at least

this article got me worried - quite a few sites online state this and this is the first car i ever bought i was excited about when i purchased it in early 2018 - so a little paranoid about causing drivetrain wear/damage since I hope the car lasts a long time

See my signature. :D

If your tires are pretty worn down then I guess all four at once will give you peace of mind. I'd probably do that myself. But as I said, under normal circumstances the rears on the staggered setup wear noticeably faster than the fronts. Rear biased AWD do that, apparently. And if you "hoon" around the rate of wear on the rears is even more pronounced. I know one guy on here who replaced his rears after 6K miles. But the fastest replacement was c. 4K miles; I don't know him, though, other than from his post about it (don't recall which member it was).

A neutral opinion would be more trustworthy than a tire shop telling us to replace all four at once. I think that the "danger" is exaggerated. As long as the tread is within spec it shouldn't be any issue to run tires that have a few millimeters difference. We're talking about a maximum difference in depth of less than 10mm.

I agree with Merlin !

This would be a definitive no. I noticed some damage on my front right and was also curious. A day later I was in a tire shop getting a screw removed and patched. I asked if the small clumps of rubber missing from the side were a warranty issue. He took a close look and said No. Then we had a chat about hitting curbs which is something I think we have in common. Speaking of which there is rim guys that can make em look new again for a small well deserved penalty fee of $150. Penalty may very from area to area.

Edit:
Your tire is :poop: hooped. You will have to replace both. My screw was close to the sidewall so it was touch a go for a bit whether or not I was going to get out of there without having to buy TWO TIRES or not.

I’m sorry Sir, however, and it pains me but I disagree! With the tire shop part that is.

I'm assuming your guy saw the chip in your sidewall and said all was good ??

Yes. Any cut, or nail warrants a tire replacement on my vehicles. I don't trust compromised sidewalls, or patches.

While expensive, do you trust a repaired tire at 100MPH+? I don't, the price for my family and safety is worth more than a tire.

Yep I should have named the thread replace 1 or pair or all 4
Knew it needed replacement but I guess was more stressing on potentially having to replace all 4 which is a lot of money which
Think the route I'll take is 1 tire shaved down - spoke to tire rack and they shave down before shipping out so that's what I'll do most economical. Taking tread depth measurements this weekend.
