I figure I'd do a poll on oil changes. :) I'm going back and forth as I just crossed 1500 miles on my Stinger. So, when did you do your first oil change and why?

Why would you question the manufacturers recommended service intervals? It's in the owners manual.

For normal service, engine oil and filter at 6000 miles/10000 km.

I'm thinking of doing my first oil change thousands of miles earlier than recommended. I've done this with my previous cars. I'm also switching to synthetic. I'm assuming the original oil is conventional.

Then why even ask? There's no technical reason to - otherwise the manufacturer would recommend it.

The oil doesn't magically degrade faster when the engine is new. There's no substantial difference in wear on a new engine. Of course, there are exceptions, and those vehicles come with different maintenance schedules.

^^^I'm asking to see what everyone did or has done, I'm curious. I will change early regardless on what the results are. As with past cars, I will also do a Blackstone reading.

I’ve always been told the first 500-1000 miles is where most of the fitment tolerances “break in” and create metal shavings. And since Kia recommends a “break in” period of 600m that confirms and falls right in the range most auto enthusiasts have suggested to me.

Also, when I took mine in for the first oil change the service director actually said it was smart to bring it in early. Couldn’t hurt and why not if it has a chance of extending the life of you engine.

Here’s more info backing up my point and hope this helps.https://www.quora.com/Should-a-new-...hould-you-follow-the-manufacturers-guidelines

One more reason I do oil change is life of oil in terms of months, that will be from date of assembly, I assume.

Manufacturers simplify things for their benefit. Why do you think they recommend to never change transmission fluid?

Who's paying for these services?

Who pays when things fail?

Manual states 6000 miles under normal driving and 3000 for extream driving but never really says what extream means.

I get lifetime oil changes from the dealer. I asked them about doing it at 3k and said they would do it at 4k which I did I'm ok with splitting the difference since there is no charge when I go.

Oil changes are cheap compared to repairs so if changing the oil more often might save on a repair I'm ok with that insurance policy especially since I'm not paying for the oil changes and they are using Mobile 1 Synthetic.

Me.

KIA.

But they do statistical analysis for developing oil change intervals. They are right conservatively most of the times. But I would rather get rid of contaminated oil.

I think it does. There are codes for stop and go, extreme temperatures etc.

Mobil1 Extended performance is a better oil for turbo cars than just mobil1 synthetic.

For those of you that answered doing your first oil change with less than 1k mi/km, what made you decide to do it early?

Only two guys did (me and @StungBlueGT2) and already gave our reasons.

My first oil change was at 5000 miles or 8000 km. You don't NEED to change it sooner than the manufacturer says, but since the car has probably been sitting in KIA's parking lot for 2-4-6 months (maybe more), I think it's safe to change it sooner rather than later, for the first oil change. Afterwards, go with the 6Kmiles/10Kkm or 6 months manufacturer's recommandation.

Correct. The first couple of thousand miles usually throws up some small metal shavings and the like. I am nearing 2K miles and should probably get an oil change. Plus, I have my foot in it half the time.

The original oil is not conventional. Your Stinger comes with, and Kia recommends using, "Total Quartz INEO HKS" which is a synthetic. This is the website for it. The page from the owner's manual recommending that specific oil is attached as well.

^^^Good to know! I've heard good things about that brand. My first two oil and filter changes and tire rotations are free per the dealer, so I'm going to make sure they are putting in that oil. After that, I will use that oil when I DIY change my oil/filter.
